How to Choose a Men's Wedding Band

Men's gold ring with diamonds

To choose a men's wedding band, decide on four things: the metal, the width, the fit (comfort fit or standard) and the finish. For most men, a 5–7 mm band in 10K or 14K gold with a comfort fit is a safe, easy-to-wear starting point, and you can adjust from there based on your hand size, your job and your style.

You will wear this ring every day for years, so comfort counts as much as looks. Here is how to work through each choice.

Which metal should a men's wedding band be?

Gold is the classic pick, and the karat tells you how much pure gold is in it.

Karat Pure gold Good for
10K 41.7% Hands-on jobs; most scratch-resistant gold
14K 58.3% Everyday wear with a richer color
18K 75% The deepest yellow; softer, shows wear sooner
  • Yellow gold is traditional and pairs well with gold chains and watches.
  • White gold has a bright, silvery look from a rhodium coating that can be refreshed over time.
  • Rose gold is warm and a little different.
  • Platinum is naturally white, heavy and durable, and costs more.

Some alternative metals look sharp but are hard or impossible to resize. Gold can usually be sized up or down, which matters if your hands change over the years.

How wide should a men's wedding band be?

Width is measured in millimeters across the top of the band.

  • 4 mm: slim and low-key. Good for smaller hands or if you rarely wear jewelry.
  • 5–6 mm: the most common range. Balanced on most hands.
  • 7–8 mm: bold. Looks right on larger hands and longer fingers.
  • 9 mm and up: a statement ring. Can feel bulky between your fingers.

Try a couple of widths on before you decide. A width that looks big in a photo can feel natural on your hand, and the other way around.

What is the difference between comfort fit and standard fit?

A standard fit band is flat on the inside. It uses less metal and sits close to the finger.

A comfort fit band is rounded on the inside, so it slides over the knuckle more easily and doesn't dig in when you grip things. Most men who aren't used to wearing a ring prefer comfort fit.

Because comfort fit uses a little more metal on the inside, it can fit slightly differently than a standard band of the same size. Always size in the same fit you plan to buy.

Which finish and profile should I pick?

  • High polish: shiny and classic. Shows scratches but can be re-polished.
  • Brushed or satin: soft matte look that hides small scratches well.
  • Hammered: textured and made to look handcrafted.
  • Flat profile: modern and clean.
  • Domed profile: rounded top, traditional and smooth.
  • Beveled edges: flat top with angled edges for a sharper look.

If you want some shine, look at bands with a row of channel-set or pavé diamonds. If you're comparing diamonds, our diamond basics guide explains the grades.

How do I get the size right?

Wide bands fit tighter than thin ones, so a man who wears a size 10 in a 4 mm band may need a 10.25 or 10.5 in an 8 mm band. Measure at the end of the day when your fingers are at their normal size, and make sure the band passes over your knuckle.

Our at-home ring size guide walks through it with a chart. For a band you'll wear every day, a professional sizing is worth it. We do ring sizing in our store; call or text for details.

Should it match her engagement ring?

It doesn't have to match, but many couples choose the same metal color so the rings look like a set. Read engagement ring basics if you are choosing both at once.
