How to Find Your Ring Size at Home

10K gold pinky ring

The easiest way to find your ring size at home is to measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits you and match it to a size chart. If you don't have one, wrap a strip of paper or string around the base of your finger, mark where it meets, measure that length in millimeters, and match the circumference to the chart below.

Home measuring gets you close. For an engagement ring or a wedding band you plan to wear every day, a professional sizing in store is still the surest way to get it right.

How do I measure a ring I already own?

  1. Pick a ring that fits the same finger you are shopping for. Your right and left hands can be different sizes.
  2. Lay it flat on a ruler with millimeter marks.
  3. Measure straight across the inside, from inner edge to inner edge. Don't include the metal.
  4. Match that diameter to the chart.

Use a ring that is round and not bent. A thin band gives the most accurate reading.

How do I measure my finger with string or paper?

  1. Cut a thin strip of paper or a piece of non-stretchy string.
  2. Wrap it around the base of your finger. It should be snug but not tight.
  3. Mark where the end overlaps.
  4. Lay it flat and measure to the mark in millimeters. That is your circumference.
  5. Slide the loop over your knuckle. If it won't pass, go up a size.

Do it two or three times and use the number that repeats. String can stretch and paper can slip, so one try isn't enough.

US ring size chart

US size Inside diameter Circumference
5 15.7 mm 49.3 mm
6 16.5 mm 51.9 mm
7 17.3 mm 54.4 mm
8 18.2 mm 57.0 mm
9 19.0 mm 59.5 mm
10 19.8 mm 62.1 mm
11 20.6 mm 64.6 mm
12 21.4 mm 67.2 mm
13 22.2 mm 69.7 mm

Each half size adds about 0.4 mm to the diameter, or about 1.3 mm to the circumference. If you land between two sizes, pick the larger one.

What mistakes make a ring fit wrong?

  • Measuring cold fingers. Fingers shrink in the cold and swell in heat. Measure at room temperature, later in the day.
  • Ignoring your knuckle. If your knuckle is bigger than the base of your finger, size for the knuckle so the ring can go on, and it may turn a little.
  • Forgetting the band width. Wide bands (about 6 mm and up) sit tighter than thin ones. Many people go up a quarter or half size for a wide band.
  • Using the wrong finger. Your ring finger and middle finger are usually different sizes, and your dominant hand often runs a bit bigger.
  • Printable sizers printed at the wrong scale. If you use one, check the scale against a real ruler first.

Can a ring be resized later?

Most solid gold rings can be sized up or down by a jeweler. Rings with stones all the way around, like eternity bands, and some heavily patterned or very wide rings are harder to size or can't be sized much. We do ring sizing in our store, so call or text for details on your piece.

If you are shopping for something with a center stone, read our diamond basics guide before you pick. Then browse our rings, where every listing shows the metal, karat and weight.

What if I am buying a ring as a surprise?

  • Borrow a ring they wear on the right finger and measure it, or press it into a bar of soap to keep an outline.
  • Ask a close friend or family member who might know.
  • When in doubt, go slightly bigger. Sizing down is usually easier than sizing up.
