Most jewelry does not break all at once. It wears down a little at a time until one day the clasp will not close or a link gives way. Here is what we see most often, what usually causes it, and how to keep a small problem from becoming a big one.

Can a broken gold chain be fixed?

In most cases, yes. Gold chains usually break at a weak point: a single link that has worn thin, the small ring that connects the chain to the clasp, or the clasp itself. When we look at a broken chain, we check:

  • Where it broke. A break in the middle of a link is different from a break at the end near the clasp.
  • The chain style. Cuban, Franco, rope and Figaro chains are each built differently, so each one is repaired a little differently.
  • Solid or hollow. Hollow chains are lighter and can dent or crimp. Solid chains are heavier and generally hold up better to daily wear.
  • The rest of the chain. If one link wore through, others nearby may be thin too. We will tell you what we see.

Keep all the pieces, even tiny ones, and bring them in a small bag. If you are shopping for a replacement instead, our gold chains collection lists the karat, width and length of each chain.

Why does my clasp keep opening or not close?

Clasps do a lot of work. Every time you put a chain on or take it off, the spring or hinge inside moves. Over time that wears out. Common clasp problems include:

  1. A weak spring in a lobster or spring-ring clasp, so it does not snap shut.
  2. A bent box clasp tongue, so it does not click and lock.
  3. A worn jump ring, the small ring that holds the clasp to the chain, which can stretch open.
  4. A clasp that is too small for the weight of the chain.

If your clasp feels loose, stop wearing the chain until it is checked. A loose clasp is the most common way people lose a chain.

What ring repairs can you do?

Rings take more hits than any other jewelry because your hands are always moving. Things to watch for:

  • Loose or missing stones. If a stone moves or you hear it click, the prongs or setting may need attention.
  • Worn prongs. Prongs wear thin over years of wear and can catch on clothing.
  • A bent or misshapen band. A ring that is no longer round can put stress on the stones.
  • A thin shank, the bottom part of the band, which can crack if it gets too thin.
  • The wrong size. Ring sizing is done in store too. See our post on what to expect when you visit for what to bring.

How much does a repair cost and how long does it take?

It depends on the piece, the metal and the work. A small fix on a thin chain is a different job than rebuilding a clasp on a heavy Cuban link. We do not want to guess at a number before we see it, so call or text (973) 673-3800 or bring it in, and we will give you details and pricing for your repair.

How can I keep my jewelry from breaking?

A few habits go a long way:

  • Take chains and rings off before the gym, heavy lifting, cleaning or sleeping.
  • Store chains flat or hung up so they do not tangle and kink.
  • Keep pieces apart so diamonds do not scratch softer gold.
  • Check clasps and prongs every so often. If something feels loose, have it looked at.
  • Remember that higher karat gold is softer. 18K gold is 75% pure and shows wear faster than 14K at 58.3% or 10K at 41.7%.
