Jewelry Gifts for Him: Chains, Bands and Bracelets

Solid Miami Cuban link gold chain

The jewelry gifts men wear most are a gold chain, a ring or band, and a bracelet. A chain is the easiest place to start because you only need to pick a style, width and length, not a ring size.

Which gold chain style should I buy him?

Each chain style has its own look. Here are the four we get asked about most:

  • Cuban link. Thick, interlocking rounded links that lie flat. Bold and classic. Shop Cuban chains
  • Franco. Tight V-shaped links that make a square, very strong chain. Great with a pendant. Shop Franco chains
  • Rope. Twisted strands that look like a rope and catch light from every angle. Shop rope chains
  • Figaro. A pattern of short links with one long link, repeated. Dressier and a little lighter. Shop Figaro chains

You can also browse every style, including mariner and Byzantine, in our chains collection.

What chain width and length should I choose?

Width is measured in millimeters. Length is measured in inches. Use this as a starting point:

Length Where it sits on most men
20 inches At the collarbone, close to the neck
22 inches Just below the collarbone, the most common choice
24 inches Mid-chest, good with a pendant
26 inches and up Lower on the chest, for a bolder look

For width, a thinner chain is easy to wear every day and works with a pendant. A wider chain is a statement on its own. If he already wears a chain, check its length and width and go a step up or match it.

Solid or hollow: what is the difference?

A solid chain has gold all the way through each link. A hollow chain has links that are hollow inside. Hollow chains look big for less gold, so they cost less, but they can dent more easily. Solid chains are heavier and hold up better to daily wear. Every product listing shows the metal, karat and, where relevant, weight, width and length, so you can compare.

Is a ring or band a good gift for a man?

A ring is a great gift if you know his size. We carry men's wedding bands, pinky rings and diamond rings. Shop rings

If you are not sure of his size, try one of these:

  • Borrow a ring he wears on the same finger and bring it in. We can measure it.
  • Trace the inside of the ring on paper.
  • Choose a chain or bracelet instead, and let him pick a ring later.

Ring sizing is done in our store. Call or text for details and pricing. Our guide on gifting jewelry when you don't know their size has more tips.

What about a bracelet for him?

A gold bracelet pairs well with a watch and is easier to size than a ring. Most men's bracelets run about 8 to 9 inches. Popular styles include Cuban, Franco, Byzantine and diamond tennis bracelets. To check his size, measure his wrist snugly and add about an inch for comfort. Shop bracelets

What karat is best for men's jewelry?

  • 10K (41.7% gold): the most durable, good for chains and bracelets he will wear every day.
  • 14K (58.3% gold): a richer yellow color and still strong.

Both are solid gold. Many of our chains come in yellow and white gold, so match what he already wears.

Quick picks

  • He wears nothing yet: a medium-width Franco or rope chain at 22 inches.
  • He already has a chain: a matching bracelet.
  • Wedding or anniversary: a band. See our anniversary jewelry ideas.
