How to Clean Diamond Jewelry Safely

Men's gold diamond ring

To clean diamond jewelry safely, soak it in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for 20 to 30 minutes, then brush gently behind and around each stone with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. Diamonds are hard, but the gold prongs and settings holding them are not, so gentle is the rule.

Why do diamonds look cloudy?

A diamond gets its sparkle from light entering the top, bouncing off the angled facets inside and coming back out. Diamonds attract oil, so a thin film of skin oil, lotion, soap or hairspray on the back of the stone blocks that light. The stone is not damaged. It just needs a clean. Rings and pinky rings get dull fastest because your hands touch everything. Studs pick up hair products, and bracelets collect lotion.

How do you clean a diamond ring at home?

  1. Close the drain. Work over a bowl or a stopped sink.
  2. Make a soak. Warm water plus 2 or 3 drops of mild dish soap.
  3. Soak for 20 to 30 minutes. This softens the film under the stones.
  4. Brush the back first. Most buildup sits under the diamond, where light enters. Use a soft toothbrush and short strokes. Then do the top and the sides.
  5. Rinse in clean warm water.
  6. Dry with a lint-free or microfiber cloth. Avoid paper towels, which can snag prongs and leave fibers.

For pavé and iced-out pieces with many small stones, soak a little longer and brush lightly in several directions. Do not dig at the stones with pins or toothpicks, which can bend the tiny beads or prongs that hold them.

What should you avoid with diamonds?

  • Bleach and chlorine. Harmful to the gold setting, not the diamond.
  • Abrasives like toothpaste or baking soda, which scratch the metal around the stone.
  • Home ultrasonic cleaners on pieces with loose stones, glued stones, or treated or fracture-filled diamonds. Vibration can shake a loose stone right out.
  • Mixed-stone pieces. Emeralds, opals, pearls and many colored stones need gentler care than diamonds. If a piece mixes stones, clean for the most delicate one, or ask us.
  • Heat shocks. Going from very hot to very cold water can stress some stones.

Does cleaning affect the 4Cs?

No. Cut, color, clarity and carat weight are fixed traits of the stone. But a dirty diamond can look like it has a lower grade than it does.

The C What it means How dirt changes the look
Cut How well the facets return light Film on the back blocks light, so the stone looks flat
Color How colorless the stone is Grime can make a stone look yellow or gray
Clarity Internal marks and surface blemishes Dirt can look like spots or inclusions
Carat Weight of the stone Not changed, but a dull stone can look smaller

How often should you clean diamond jewelry?

An engagement ring or a diamond band worn daily looks its best with a quick soak about once a week and a deeper clean once a month. Diamond earrings and bracelets can go every few weeks. Taking rings off before you put on lotion, cook with your hands or work out keeps them cleaner between soaks. Our post on how to clean gold jewelry at home covers the metal side of the same routine.

When should a jeweler look at it?

While the piece is drying, hold it up to the light and look closely. Gently tap it near your ear. Bring it in if you notice any of these:

  • A stone that wiggles, rattles or sits crooked
  • A prong that looks bent, flat or worn thin
  • A gap where a small stone used to be
  • A ring that snags on sweaters or hair
  • Buildup you cannot reach, deep in a setting

Catching a loose stone early is far easier than replacing a lost one.
