How to Clean Gold Jewelry at Home

The safest way to clean gold jewelry at home is a soak in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, a gentle scrub with a soft toothbrush, a rinse and a pat dry. That simple routine works for solid 10K, 14K and 18K gold chains, rings, bracelets and earrings without scratching or dulling the metal.

What do you need to clean gold jewelry?

You probably have everything already. Skip the special kits until you have tried this.

  • A small bowl of warm water (not boiling)
  • Mild dish soap without bleach or harsh degreasers
  • A soft-bristle toothbrush, ideally a new one kept just for jewelry
  • A lint-free cloth or microfiber cloth
  • A strainer or a stopped sink, so nothing slips down the drain

How do you clean gold step by step?

  1. Mix the bath. Add 2 or 3 drops of dish soap to a cup of warm water and swirl it.
  2. Soak. Let the piece sit for 15 to 20 minutes. This loosens lotion, sweat and dust packed into links and settings.
  3. Brush gently. Work the toothbrush along each link of a chain, inside the band of a ring and around clasps. Light pressure is enough.
  4. Rinse. Use clean warm water. Hold chains over a strainer or a closed drain.
  5. Dry completely. Pat with a soft cloth, then let the piece air-dry on a towel for a few minutes so no water sits inside hollow links or behind stones.
  6. Buff. A light pass with a microfiber cloth brings back the shine.

For a rope, Franco or Cuban chain, brush in the direction the links lie. Tight patterns hold more buildup, so give them a longer soak rather than more scrubbing.

What should you never use on gold?

A lot of internet hacks do more harm than good. Avoid these:

  • Chlorine bleach and pool chemicals. Chlorine can weaken gold alloys over time, especially lower karats.
  • Toothpaste and baking soda. Both are abrasive and leave fine scratches, especially on polished surfaces.
  • Paper towels and tissues. The fibers are rougher than they feel and can scratch.
  • Boiling water on pieces with glued-in stones, pearls or enamel.
  • Ultrasonic cleaners at home on hollow chains, plated pieces or anything with soft or treated stones.

Does karat change how you clean it?

The method stays the same, but it helps to know what you are cleaning. Karat tells you how much of the metal is pure gold. The rest is alloy, like copper, silver or zinc, which adds strength and color.

Karat Pure gold What to know
10K 41.7% Hardest and most scratch-resistant; alloys can tarnish a little faster
14K 58.3% A good balance of color and durability for daily wear
18K 75% Richer color, softer metal; use the lightest brushing

White gold is usually plated with rhodium for its bright white color. Clean it the same way, but go easy with the brush. If it starts to look yellowish over time, that is the plating wearing, not dirt, and it is something we can look at in store.

How often should you clean gold jewelry?

For pieces you wear every day, like a chain or a wedding band, a quick soak every 2 to 4 weeks keeps them bright. Pieces you wear now and then only need a clean when they look dull. Wiping jewelry with a soft cloth after you take it off each night cuts down on buildup between cleanings.

While you are cleaning, take a minute to check the clasp, the jump rings near the clasp and any stone settings. A clasp that does not snap shut firmly or a stone that moves is worth showing a jeweler before it turns into a lost piece.

When should a jeweler clean it instead?

Bring it in if the piece has diamonds or other stones you are unsure about, if dirt is packed deep in a setting, if a chain has kinks or stiff links, or if the gold looks scratched and you want it polished. Polishing removes a thin layer of metal, so it is best done by hand by someone who knows how much to take off.
