Before you order a custom nameplate, confirm the exact spelling, capitalization, any accents or symbols, the font, the gold color and karat, and the chain length. Custom pieces are made to order and are final sale, so a two-minute check now saves a lot of disappointment later.
We make every nameplate by hand from exactly what you send us. Here is the checklist we would walk through with you at the counter.
Why does double-checking matter so much?
A nameplate is cut from solid gold in the shape of the letters you type. Once the gold is cut, a letter cannot be swapped. That is why custom and personalized pieces are final sale. We will always work with you to make sure you are happy with it, and the best way to get there is to get the details right before we start.
What should you check before you order?
-
Spelling. Ask the person, or check an ID, a birth announcement or a signed card. Names like Kaitlyn, Caitlin and Katelyn are easy to mix up.
-
Capitalization. Script names usually start with one capital: Jasmine. Block names are often all capitals: JASMINE. Some names have a capital in the middle, like DeShawn or McKenzie. Type it exactly as you want it.
-
Accents and special characters. If the name has an accent (é, ñ, á), an apostrophe or a hyphen, tell us. Ask us whether a particular mark works in the font you chose.
-
Nickname or full name. Decide whether it should read Alexandra, Alex or Lexi. Choose what the person actually goes by.
-
Font. Script or block? If you are unsure, read Script vs Block Letters.
-
Finish and add-ons. Plain, diamond-cut, two-tone or diamonds, and any heart, crown or bar.
-
Gold color and karat. Check the listing for the metal, karat and approximate weight.
-
Chain length. 18 inches is the most common for women, 20 to 24 inches for men. See What Chain Length Is Best for a Nameplate Necklace?
-
Timing. Custom nameplates take 10–14 business days to make. Count back from the day you need it.
What are the most common nameplate mistakes?
- Autocorrect changing a name, such as Jaylen to Jailed or Aniya to Aniyah.
- Typing the name in all capitals by accident when you wanted script.
- Extra spaces, especially before or after the name.
- Forgetting an accent or apostrophe.
- Guessing at spelling for a surprise gift instead of finding a way to check.
- Choosing a chain length without measuring.
How can you check the spelling for a surprise gift?
Look at how they sign texts, cards or social media. Ask a close friend or family member. Check a school name tag, a diploma or a work badge. If the name has more than one common spelling, it is worth one discreet question.
