How to Choose Chain Width: A Millimeter Guide

Diamond cut gold Cuban link chain

Chain width is the measurement in millimeters across a single link, and it decides how bold the chain looks. As a rule of thumb, 1 to 3mm reads delicate, 4 to 6mm reads everyday, and 7mm and up reads like a statement.

How is chain width measured?

Width is measured straight across the widest part of one link, side to side. It is not the thickness from front to back. A 5mm Franco and a 5mm Cuban have the same width, but they can look different because the Franco is four-sided and the Cuban lies flat.

If you want to check a chain you own, use a ruler with millimeter marks or a set of calipers. For reference, a U.S. dime is about 1.35mm thick and about 18mm across, and 25mm is just under one inch.

What does each chain width look like?

Width Look Good for
1 to 2mm Fine, delicate Women's everyday, small pendants, nameplates, layering
3mm Light but visible Women's statement, men's subtle chain, most pendants
4 to 5mm Everyday men's chain Wearing solo or with a medium pendant
6 to 8mm Noticeable, bold Men's chain worn alone, larger pendants
9 to 12mm Statement A Cuban or rope that is the whole look
13mm and up Heavy statement Customized heavy Cubans and ropes

What chain width should a man wear?

For most men, 4mm to 6mm is the easiest place to start. It is visible without being heavy, and it works with a T-shirt or a button-down. If you want the chain to be the focus, 7mm to 10mm gives you that. Broader frames and larger necks can carry wider chains more easily.

Style matters too. Cuban links look strong at 6mm and up. Franco chains look thicker than their width, so 4 to 5mm already feels solid. More on that in Franco Chains Explained.

What chain width should a woman wear?

Most women start between 1mm and 3mm. That range is light, layers well and suits a pendant or a custom nameplate necklace. If you want a bolder look, a 4mm to 5mm rope or Cuban makes a confident statement on its own.

What width works with a pendant?

Match the chain to the pendant so neither overpowers the other.

  • Small pendant or charm: 1 to 2mm
  • Medium pendant, cross or initial: 2.5 to 4mm
  • Large medallion or iced pendant: 4mm and up, ideally a rope or Franco

Always check that the pendant bail, the loop at the top, is wide enough to slide over both the chain and the clasp.

How does width change weight and length?

  1. Weight goes up fast. A wider chain uses much more gold per inch, especially in solid links. That is also why a wide chain costs more. Each listing shows the weight where it applies.
  2. Wide chains sit shorter. A thick chain takes up more room around your neck, so it falls a little higher than a thin chain of the same length. Go up about an inch for chains over 8mm.
  3. Hollow chains save weight. If you want width without the weight, a hollow chain is an option. Read Cuban Link Chains: The Complete Guide for solid vs hollow.
