Aftermarket vs Factory Diamonds on a Watch

Factory diamonds are set by the watch brand when the watch is made. Aftermarket diamonds are added later by someone else, to the bezel, dial, case or bracelet. A watch with aftermarket diamonds can still be a genuine watch, but it is no longer original, and that affects how brands service it and how collectors value it.

Factory vs aftermarket

Factory Aftermarket
Who set them The watch brand A jeweler or customizer later
Paperwork Usually listed on the original papers Not on the brand's papers
Collector value Generally higher Generally lower than an original watch
Brand service Serviced as normal Brands may decline to service modified watches or replace parts

Is aftermarket bad?

Not if you know what you are buying and love the look. The problem is only when it is not disclosed. Always ask, and make sure the price reflects it.

How can I tell?

Check the papers against the configuration, look at stone quality and setting, and ask the seller directly. A trusted jeweler or watchmaker can inspect it.
